Why Is Art Important?

Art holds a central place in the Naskapi art traditions of Kawawachikamach, Matimekush, and Schefferville. As a self‑governing First Nation community in Quebec—established under the Naskapi Act of 1984 and renamed in 1999—the Naskapi Nation counts over 1,600 members (nearly 1,000 residing in Kawawachikamach), all committed to cultural vitality and community development. Engaging in traditional and contemporary art practices—beading, painting, carving, and more—fosters mental health, resilience, and social cohesion by bridging Western healthcare with Indigenous worldviews and promoting community strength. By showcasing and supporting local Kawawachikamach art, Matimekush art, and Schefferville art, each calendar, print, or handmade craft becomes a living narrative that reinforces cultural pride, transmits ancestral knowledge, and ensures that the spirit of the Nation endures in homes and public spaces alike.
